Teaching WACC VBS

5. “You Have Not Taught, until They Have Learned!”

This has become a paradox for any “would-be” teacher. Just because you formally teach anything does not mean that the student actually learns what was taught. If you are just talking, maybe no one is learning?

Perhaps, I should mention here there is a vast difference between teaching and learning with children (pedagogy) and adults (andragogy). There is a good treatment of this difference that might interest you. http://www.infed.org/lifelonglearning/b-andra.htm

While I have appreciated having many teachers over the years, I have found few teachers who actually helped me learn what they taught. Not all learning is as clear as teaching driving skills, which results in the ability to drive. However, some subjects are not so easy to discern whether learning is taking place or not, subjects like theology, politics or philosophy. So this brings us to how we measure our Biblical teaching. It also has to be learning! If you teach a person anything, is that teaching measurable? It has to be more than just testing—the regurgitation of facts and figures. For us, it has to be about life application and life transformation.

This is one of the principles taught by Coach John Wooden, the former basketball coach of UCLA. In the realm of sports, the ability to master skills was his proof of real teaching and real learning. Dare we do less?
