Michael LaFond and I teamed up to be involved in a Halloween Alternative program called the Fun-Factory Carnival. It was sponsored by the Community Christian Alliance Church of Northridge, CA. They featured game booths of all kinds and bounce houses and other inflatables, plus tons of candy at every stop. However, the entire event attracted nearly 1,800 guests (children, youth and adults), which has become a solid outreach program into the community.

Michael and I became part of the church’s strategy to redeem this traditional holiday for the Lord. We were asked to present the gospel to those who came our way. The church did a good job promoting our shows. The sanctuary held about 185, which was moderately full for two sessions, and packed for the last two sessions. Attending these four special magic performances was optional. So we were pleased to hear that 516 came our way for the four thirty-minute programs.

All who came to our programs signed up for a Raffle and turned in half of their double ticket. So we announced a Raffle winner for a $25 gift certificate from Toy’s R Us in each session, which was a big hit with the kids and parents. Also there was a glow necklace for all who came, but only given out as they exited. Of course, everyone turned in their ticket stub to get their glow necklace, young and old alike.

While there was some entertainment value to our performances, our message was the main thing, definitely weaving the gospel throughout the presentations. At the end, there was an opportunity given for those who wanted to invite Jesus into their life. They could do so, without coming forward or going to a counselor. Those who prayed with us, in their seats, were encouraged to fold their Raffle ticket stub in half and turn it in at the end when all received their glow necklace.

We were pleased to hear that 247 folded tickets were received. Many of these were children, but there were adults/parents in this number. What a great time we had serving the Lord together. We both were convinced that God was at work in the audiences. Further, we felt that we provided a more intensional evangelistic ministry, that was kind of missing in the churches ten year history of doing this community-outreach event. It is now our prayer that some of these responsive guests find their way into the fellowship of this exciting family of believers.

We had a moment to catch a view of the audience before one of the next performances.

I thought you might like to see some of my freestanding stage props to add a little color and carnival feel to the stage.

Here the balloon man who adorns the stage with real balloons.

And then there is the lion tamer, who compliments the others.
