Fire BDay Cake

On the occasion of my annual date of birth, there were so many candles on my birthday cake that the fire trucks had to be called to put out the fire.  The trucks seemed to have caused lots of unwanted attention. At least there were a few extra people on hand to help me eat the cake. LOL! Oh where, oh where have all the years gone?

Coach’s Huddle Dec 7, 2009

Dear Protege’s,

Hey, Listen to This! December business is here! Mexico Kid Mission is coming; our weekly training has begun. India Meals of Love is in full swing hoping to raise $72,000 and send over Quarter of a Million Meals to India.  I presented my Dove Pan-Rice Trick five times this weekend, the trick worked too. Also, I went to Disneyland to celebrate my daughter’s birthday Sunday. That is one special place at Christmas. It was very fun for the family. At home: all the decorations are up, except the house lights…this week I guess.

Kidology Announces New Curriculum, Free for Members! Did you hear the news? Hot off the presses, this weekend Kidology announced a free-downloadable, three-year curriculum for you to consider. It is called Discovering God’s Path. Beginning with the January, 2010, you can download a unit per month, as long as, you are a current member of Kidology. Membership has its benefits. Check it out and find out what Open-Source Curriculum is all about. See http://www.kidology.org/page.asp?i=178

The “Crock-Pot” Approach to Lesson Preparation As you may well know the proper way to use a crock-pot is to gather all the ingredients into the crock-pot and slowly cook it many hours. This is a great idea for a gourmet stew to greet you after work. There is something that happens with this slow, deliberate form of cooking that is superior to most fast-cooking methods, namely, you do not loose any of the natural juices. Everything is saved in the pot.

Begin reviewing the next week’s lesson on same day you taught the last lesson, just to get the text going in your heart and mind. Then each day review the whole lesson rather superficially, followed by another round, more intentionally. Then, the next day you do some research, and plan to secure resources. You then plan the optional pieces to supplement your lesson. Next, you organize your time and sequence of teaching, being sure to share what the lessons says to you. Each day you add another layer to deepen your preparation. It just stews in its own juice. You speak from a position of having let the Word of God dwell in you for the week, not just on what you can get, late on Saturday night. This is the slow crock-pot approach to lesson preparation. Try it!

Thirteen Effects of Christmas (If You Understand My Meaning) It has been my pleasure to work with you all. Sharon and I have seen many Christmases in our 43 years of marriage (an attraction, if you understand my meaning). However, we both agree that having six grand children takes the holiday to another level. (a antigravity, if you understand my meaning) We got grandchild #8 this year (a production, if you understand my meaning). We celebrate how Jesus humbled himself and became flesh so that we know God (a transposition, if you understand my meaning). My and wife and I both invited Jesus into our lives as young children, and we were changed. Our four children have been converted too. Now we pray that all our grand children will make this life-changing decision too. Three have already done that now (a transformation, if you understand my meaning).

Our hearts desire for children everywhere would be that they could experience God’s forgiveness of sin and guilt (a vanish, if you understand my meaning). Of course, coming to Jesus is just the beginning of a life-long discipleship process where we mirror, be like and copy the life of Jesus. (an attraction, if you understand my meaning) So we want to just send our greetings to you and yours praying that you will get through this season avoiding distraction and focusing on Jesus. (a penetration, if you understand my meaning). We know prayer changes things and God is still on the throne and wants to do the impossible for us (an animation, if you understand my meaning). We can appreciate that this time of year can be conflictual, having family around and being with difficult people, but we would encourage you to be kind, civil and as loving a possible this year. It could make a huge difference (a restoration, if you understand my meaning).

For myself, I want to find out what God is doing in the New Year and do it with Him (a sympathetic reaction, if you understand my meaning). I know that God has been protecting me as I have gone global in recent times and I am experiencing his provision and care. I am secure in Him (an invulnerability, if you understand my meaning). I am experiencing the fullness of the Holy Spirit and the power of His word (a physical abnormality, if you understand my meaning). The outsiders will want what we have, but they cannot attain this life by merely copying us and doing good works. Good works, in themselves, will help anyone get to heaven or have this new life in Christ. Those who go through the motions will surely experience the hypocrisy of the effort. (a spectator failure, if you understand my meaning). There you have it, the effects of Christmas.

Merry Christmas, Barney and Sharon Kinard

Dear Protege’s,

Hey, Listen to This!

Any Turkey Left? Just the bones, right? We had a wonderful time visiting my oldest daughter and her family in Sacramento. They did all the cooking, so there are no leftovers here. However, before we arrived there my two grand daughters gave us their colds. So for the last five days, we have been nursing a cold. I am trying to get back to the normal grind, but the cold is just hanging on.

What Would Jesus like for His Birthday? Wondering… if the answer might be to serve the homeless, widows and the fatherless. Maybe we need to feed the hungry and visit prisoners in jail. I am going to Mexico this Christmas, visiting poor, sick, cold, needy families, and prisoners. We will feed, cloth and bring the good news of Jesus. Plus our church is raising money to feed hungry in India.

A Shout Out for Bekah Bowman! She announced last week that she is pregnant with their first child. Join me in congratulating Bekah and Danny. Great news! We all rejoice with you Bekah.

What is a Heuristic Device? Heuristic is from New Latin heuristicus, from Greek heuriskein meaning to discover. It has lots of definitions depending upon the discipline that uses it. However, it a device to help one to learn, discover or investigate. In education, it is a method of teaching that allows the pupil to learn things for themselves. It is a form of problem solving by experimenting, especially trial-and-error methods. In computing, it denotes a “rule of thumb” for solving problems. In testing, it forces the person to choose or lean towards either extreme, thus avoiding the middle ground or middle of the road. For our purposes, the “testing devices” we use and Barney’s “rule of thumb” statements are heuristic devices. You might be helped to study Heuristics more by doing some Google research on your own.

Luis Palau’s Next Generation Alliance® Conference Equips Hundreds From Around The World

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: Jodi Carlson or Tim Robnett 503.614.1500 jodi.carlson@palau.org or tim.robnett@palau.org

PORTLAND, OREGON (ANS) — In a world strapped by the confines of a global recession, how relevant is evangelism? Is anyone listening? Does anyone care? As made clear among the 350 attendees at Luis Palau’s Innovative Evangelism Conference on November 10-13, there has never been a better time than now to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ.

“Doors for the Gospel are opening as never before,” said Next Generation Alliance® Director Dr. Tim Robnett. “This conference is equipping evangelists and ministry leaders from around the world for the task ahead.”

Attendees represented more than 10 countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Argentina, and Poland. “Coming to a conference like this is so important,” said attendee Justus Amunga, who traveled from Kenya. “It’s a place where evangelists can exchange ideas and find fellowship and encouragement.”

Joining Palau as featured speakers were renowned apologist Dinesh D’Souza and the senior pastor of the Rock Church and Academy, Miles McPherson. Dove Award-winning singer/songwriter Matt Redman also joined Palau at the conference, leading attendees in worship and special workshops. Along with much encouragement, attendees received practical training in more than 70 total workshops. Tracks ranged in emphasis from Internet evangelism to fundraising, Latin America to action sports.

“The fundraising part has been a practical takeaway,” said Jason Mendes who came from San Diego with Walking on Water’s surf ministry. He came to get tools for launching a ministry similar in format but specific to wakeboarding. “We envision going out and doing crazy stuff, but most of us don’t realize the rest of the infrastructure that makes it actually possible.”

“It’s cool to see how God puts all of these people in different niches and subcultures with different giftings and abilities,” said Chris Webster, conference director. “What unites us is the Gospel, and making Christ known. Whether someone is a proclamation evangelist or an artist, we all want to communicate the message of Christ.”

“Proclaiming Christ as One,” the theme for this year’s conference, reflects the rally cry that gave birth to NGA. Founded by Palau in 1998 with the goal of multiplying the impact of the Good News, NGA now includes more than 200 partner evangelists and ministries. “Hundreds of millions have never heard about the cross of Christ and His saving work,” said Palau. “When we work together we more effectively flood the world with the Gospel.”

• Day Dreaming or Vision?

daydreaming

Pursuing Your Dreams? There is nothing quite like the freedom to pursue your dreams. Many of you are launching your children’s ministries, still others of you are farther along. However, the same question applies: How are you preparing to achieve your vision? When I was a college student, I would often wonder just how my life would work out. I seemed to be occupied with the direction of my ministry. I just knew that God was working in me, and that I was moving towards becoming full time in ministry to children some day.

Putting Your Best Foot Forward

Taking One-More-Step Closer To Jesus

If you could figure out how to take one-more-step closer to Jesus, what would that look like? Would you pray? Would you read a great book? Join a Bible Study? Would you prepare differently? Would you ask for more wisdom? Would you give more? Would you witness more? What would it take for you to take One-More-Step Closer to Jesus?

The Art of Loving Your Child

FAMILY MATTERS

A message from Sabrina Mayrand, Deacon of Children’s Ministries

As leader of the Westside children’s ministry, Westside Kids, I am very passionate about families and empowering parents to be the primary spiritual leaders in their children’s lives. Recently, my mentor and children’s ministry coach, Rev. Barney Kinard, encouraged me to explore why that might be. He gave me the exercise of writing my conversion story. Since I invited Jesus into my life at the ripe age of 5, I began by writing about my childhood. Here is an excerpt:”My parents were very intentional about incorporating God into our   day-to-day lives. As a family, we would talk about Him, read about  Him, pray to Him, etc. I knew He was there, in our home and in our interactions.” By no means was my family perfect; we certainly had our ups and downs, and I went through some very challenging times in my teens. It was, however, the foundation that was established in my childhood that got me through those times, and ultimately brought me back to my Lord and Savior.

In fall of 1960, I entered a Preacher-Boy Contest sponsored by Youth for Christ in Denver Colorado, under the leadership of Jim Groen. I did not win the contest, but God used that experience the next day to call me into the ministry to Preach the Word.

After graduation from Littleton High School I began my preparation for ministry by attending Moody Bible Institute. Upon Graduation in 1964, I then attended Biola University and then graduated from Azusa Pacific University in 1966. Graduate work began at Talbot Theological Seminary and graduation followed from Fuller Theological Seminary in 1972.
